In front of the Duomo stands an impressive equestrian statue. But did you know that Leonardo da Vinci also attempted to create one? His ambitious project in Milan was intended to be the largest equestrian statue ever built, a tribute to Duke Francesco Sforza. True to his reputation for leaving works unfinished, Leonardo only managed to complete a 24-foot clay model of the horse. Unfortunately, a series of wars disrupted the projectโ€”the bronze set aside for the statue was melted down to make cannonballs, and the clay model was later used for target practice by invading French troops.
